Focus Group #9
April 15, 2010
Topic: Open Space
On April 15th, the Rebuild Potrero team held the first of a 2-part focus group to work on programming the open space for the proposed master plan. The first session focused on "Central" park at 24th & Missouri, the pocket park at 25th & Connecticut, "Triangle Park" at Missouri & Texas, and "Squiggle Park" at 24th & Wisconsin. Nearly 50 people were in attendance throughout the evening.
The meeting began with a quick recap of the information gathered from a focus group held in February 2009: Community Space, Open Space and Circulation. In addition to informing the street layout of the proposed master plan, participants of that focus group discussed types of open spaces, services and amenities that were most important to them. Please see “Focus Group #3” for more details on that meeting.
After this recap and a review by the landscape architect of the subject open spaces, the master plan architect introduced an exercise intended to gather additional input about the preferred uses for these spaces. Participants worked individually and in small groups to identify potential uses placing scaled icons such as a butterfly garden or a play structure for kids onto a diagram of a park to indicate their preferred use(s). In addition, one small group at a time was able to place icons on a scaled model illustrating the slopes of Central Park. At some point throughout the night, everyone was able to individually plan a park and work collaboratively on the model.
Over a dinner of Goat Hill Pizza at the end of the night, several participants shared their ideas with the group. A follow-up focus group on June 9th will recap the information from this focus group and cover additional open space along Texas Street, stairs and streets.
