Resident Meeting #3
November 17, 2008
Opportunities & Constraints
At the third meeting the goal was to provide an opportunity for Residents of Potrero Terrace and Annex to share with one another, and with the BRIDGE team, the elements they had identified on the bus tour that were particularly noteworthy for them — whether positively or negatively – and explain why. Using the photos they had taken, many Residents created “posters” with notes detailing what they felt was successful, and what could be done better at Potrero. The project master plan architects, Van Meter Williams Pollack, then offered their assessment of the opportunities and constraints that the Potrero site presents to them as designers — from the steepness of the slopes, to magnificent access to sunlight and views, to the rockiness of the soil — and some of the implications of these site qualities to the design challenges inherent to the rebuilding process. They also provided an overview of the concept of “defensible space” — a set of design considerations that address safety, community building and sustainability. Residents were invited (and encouraged) to sign up for the Focus Group sessions that would begin in the New Year.
